Pacific Service Credit Union announces that it has surpassed $1 million in giving through its Community Involvement Program. Launched in 2001, to give back to the communities it serves, the Credit Union’s Community Involvement Program focuses on five major areas designated for charitable giving: children (especially those in at-risk and low-income areas); the American Red Cross; low-income credit unions; financial abuse prevention; and donations to recognize employee volunteer spirit. “As a good corporate citizen it is our responsibility to do what we can to help in the communities we serve,” explained Tom Smigielski, president and CEO of Pacific Service CU. “We don’t ask our employees or our members to give. As a business, we take it upon ourselves to do what we can to better the lives of the less fortunate in our communities.” Over the past six years the Credit Union has touched the lives of more than 280,000 individuals through donations to hundreds of organizations, including: Children’s Hospital Oakland, Children’s Hospital of Central California, Marine Mammal Center, Huckleberry Youth Programs, the American Red Cross, the American Lung Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, YMCA programs, Open Heart Kitchen, Elder Financial Protection Network, Salvation Army, Lindsay Wildlife Museum, and many others. “As board members, we take active roles in our Community Involvement Program,” said Charlie Diaz, Chairman of Pacific Service CU’s Board of Directors. “We worked with senior management to establish the program, we look for opportunities to give, and each month we review and approve funding requests. We have accomplished a great deal, but we know that there are still needs to be filled and we look forward to continuing our efforts in the communities we serve.” Along with the Community Involvement Program, the Credit Union has returned more than $14 million in bonus rebates to its members – in 2006, the Credit Union returned nearly $1.4 million to members. In addition, the members of Pacific Service CU continued to enjoy high rates on savings, low rates on loans and the service convenience provided by the addition of new branches. Each year, the Credit Union sets aside funds available for the Community Involvement Program and never asks staff or members to contribute money.
