'Nambiar's appointment could be source of discomfort to Pakistan'

By: Islamabad News

The appointment of veteran Indian diplomat Vijay Nambiar as the chief of staff of the new United Nations Secretary General could be a source of "discomfort" to Pakistan, an official here said.

"Namibiar enjoys the reputation of a gentleman diplomat but his Indian background could be source of discomfort to Pakistan," daily 'The News' quoted the unnamed official as saying.

"Pakistan is concerned over the increasing influence of Indians in key bodies of UN but Islamabad has not conveyed anything in writing to UN officials in this regard," the newspaper said.

"By virtue of holding the top post, Nambiar could have a major influence on the new Secretary General," it said.

Pakistan was expected to get a full report on the changes in UN after its permanent envoy Muneer Akram returned from leave, it said.

Nambiar, the soft-spoken Indian diplomat, is well known in Islamabad as he headed the Indian High Commission during the crucial year of 2001, which saw the Agra summit followed by tensions in the aftermath of the attack on the Indian parliament in December, 2001.

He was subsequently recalled as part of India's protest.
