Jodhpur, Dec 31: The New Year was ushered in here in style -- with a breathtaking display today by world-renowned 'Sarang' aerobatics team and 'Akashganga' sky diving team, held as part of the ongoing Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Indian Air Force. In spite of severe cold and foggy conditions on a typical winter morning, a large number of people, mostly school and college students along with defence personnel and their families, gathered at the Air Force Station here. The Sarang made a spectacular entry in inverted "wine glass" formation. The lead helicopter then took a vertical peal-off and undertook a 180-degree rotation followed by a dip and smart salute. The three-helicopter formation also demonstrated the "reverse flying" capability of the versatile ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) to the awe of spectators. The team re-grouped and performed daring maneouvers, which included the small turn, cross-over break, double synchro cross, level mesh and arrow. The display by the Sarang came to grand finale with "Sarang Split" in which the four helicopters crossed each other vertically and horizontally. The show was followed by daredevil display by the "Akashganga" team. The Mi-17 helicopters dropped the skydivers at a height of about 10,000 feet for a "free fall". The team formed a "ring" and split up, making a spot landing one by one, enthralling the spectators with their pin-point accuracy. --- PTI
