A Delhi court today remanded to 14-day judicial custody the Chandigarh based doctor J S Bedi, who had allegedly issued fake medical certificates to Vikas Gill, one of the accused in the model Jessica Lall murder case. Bedi was produced before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau after the expiry of his three day police custody, and was sent to judicial custody till September 22. Bedi had surrendered before the court on September 5 which sent him to a three-day police remand allowing his lawyers to be present during interrogation. Bedi, against whom a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued on August 25 had been absconding and even moved an anticipatory bail application before the Delhi High Court which he withdrew before surrendering. Bedi has been accused of giving false medical certificates to Gill that he was suffering from spinal problems and to facilitate his personal exemption during the trial of the case. The court had on August 25 issued a non-bailable warrant against him as he had failed to appear before it in the case registered against him on the order of the Delhi High Court. Delhi High Court had on May 31 directed the police to initiate criminal proceedings against Bedi, who allegedly issued several false medical certificates in favour of Vikas Gill to facilitate his exemption from attending the trial. Gill, who was charged with harbouring the prime accused Manu Sharma, fled to the US in October 2004 violating the bail conditions which stipulated that he shall not leave the country without prior permission of the court.
