Ninety-five fishermen in nine trawlers from Digha in East Midnapore district have gone missing in the Bay of Bengal since August 14. Other trawlers which were also missing in the deep sea have been sighted near creeks in Orissa and Bakkhali, Diamond Harbour and Namkhana in West Bengal, secretary of Digha Fishermen and Fish traders association Barun Maity said. The sea had turned rough due to inclement weather. Sources at the Shankarpur Fishermen and Fish Traders association said the fishermen who had ventured from Shankarpur, in the same district, have all returned safe. Maity said absence of wireless sets in the trawlers was posing a major hurdle for establishing contact with the missing fishermen. The trawlers might have drifted to Orissa coast, he said. The exact number of trawlers which had gone out for fishing was not known as "most of the times they go without informing the Association", Maity said.
