God’s powerful protection, manifested glory, faithfulness through testing and trials, and His covenanted victory for those who call on His name, are important themes of the novel. Angel’s outlook transforms as she trusts in God’s Word, leaning on its strong and powerful foundation. A victim of physical and emotional abuse from her husband, Todd displays heartfelt empathy for her characters. Todd’s desire to write came about when her husband’s abusive behavior became directed not only at her, but at her children. She later separated from him. After reading increasing reports of women and children suffering because of abuse in the home, she felt God call her to write The Girlfriend and the Rock. As a teacher of 9th grade Science at the Robert F. Wagner Jr. Secondary School for Arts and Technology, Todd loves talking with teenagers and young adults, asking them about the course of their lives. “I first became interested in guiding teens and young adults to better life decisions when I saw them repeating familiar mistakes. God moved me to make a difference . . .” Gillian Todd lives in Rockaway Park, New York, with her four children, surrounded by members of her church ’family’. She studied at the University of Guyana, West Indies, and received the Joyce Adler award for excellence in literature. She later completed studies for a Bachelor of science in environmental studies and received a diploma in education. She plans a book signing at Glory Light Tabernacle in late September, which will coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness month in October.
