ChristiaNet.com (http://www.christianet.com), the world's largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads recently conducted a poll about when life begins. There were 500 participants who answered the question, "Does life start at conception, first heart beat, second trimester, or birth?" ChristiaNet offered poll takers the opportunity to comment on their selection. Although there was a plethora of interesting responses, results overwhelmingly support the idea that unborn babies are alive at conception. "The Bible is clear about life," stated ChristiaNet's president, Bill Cooper. "But many people, even some Christians, are unclear on this fact because our society accepts abortion procedures. The truth has become skewed in order to ease the social conscience." (http://www.christianet.com/bible/) Of the 500 participants, 34 believe that life begins at birth. "When in the womb, you are nobody, you know nothing and nothing knows you. You could be anything in the womb, a snake, football, stone, water, etc. 'Till you are born and take in the breath of earth (life) - now life continues," stated one participant. Those who believe that life begins at birth are generally supportive of all abortion procedures. Only 2 respondents selected the option that life begins at 2nd trimester indicating a broad belief that late-term abortions is killing unborn babies. Nationally, 36 states have banned late-term abortion procedures according to the Stateline website. Twenty-four respondents believe that life begins at the first heart beat. A comment in support of this selection said, "When you hear a heart beat, you know something is alive." Medical research shows that unborn babies' embryonic hearts begins to pump blood at around 22 days of gestation, but cannot be heard without amplification until 20 weeks. The majority of pollers, 440, believe that life begins at conception, subscribing to the idea that abortion at any time during a pregnancy is killing a life. Comments in support of life at conception ranged from the scientific to the religious. "Egg and sperm create a new cell and living cells begin dividing," cited one poll-taker. "Because God tells us that before he formed us in womb, he knew us (Jeremiah 1:5)," stated another. Cooper concluded, "Poll results represent a belief that abortion is wrong, yet our culture continues to tolerate this social travesty."
