On Sunday, November 11th from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Addison Gallery of American Art hosts “Ipswich Day” to honor the historic North Shore town. The exhibition, Ipswich Days: Arthur Wesley Dow and His Hometown, of work by historic artist Arthur Wesley Dow (1857-1922), is showing now through January 6, 2008 and inspires this community-driven event. For more information, please visit www.addisongallery.org. Guest curator, Trevor Fairbrother, will begin the day’s activity at 1:45 p.m. with an insightful gallery talk on the subject of the Dow exhibition. A newly discovered album of forty-one cyanotypes, blue-toned photographs depicting scenes of Ipswich, is a highlight of the exhibition, which also features Dow’s paintings and woodcut prints. From images of clam shanties, marshes and farms to people, trees, flowers and boats, the exhibition offers a new appreciation for both Dow and his beloved hometown. At 2:45 p.m., following the gallery talk, will be a student poetry reading by fourth graders from the Winthrop School in Ipswich. After a visit to the Addison, the fourth graders visited the marshes of Ipswich and created their own art and poetry inspired by their studies of this unique landscape. The celebration finishes with a 3:45 p.m. presentation of the contemporary photography of Dorothy Kerper Monnelly by the artist herself. Donnelly resides near the salt marshes of Ipswich. Her work represents a dedicated meditation on the splendor of her home landscape. Having lived in the town for over thirty years, her awareness and appreciation for its beauty informs her portfolio which includes landscapes and abstract patterns from the salt marshes, sand dunes and ice covered brooks of Ipswich.
