The agriculture production has touched 16.12 lakh tonnes even as annual food grains requirement is 18.35 lakh tonnes in the state, Minister for Agriculture Abdul Aziz Zargar said today. Efforts are on to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture produce in the state where 19 lakh people are direct cultivators and 3 lakh are engaged in the sector as labourers, the minister told the Legislative Assembly while winding up a discussion on grants of departments under his ministry. Zargar said diversification of agriculture is on anvil and added that transfer of technology from laboratory to land is imperative to achieve self-reliance in the farm sector. He said subsidy on tractors, power pillars, foot-pumps and power sprayers is provided to the farmers in order to boost agriculture practices. Zargar said due to the persistent efforts of the department the area under cultivation for vegetables and floriculture has gone up considerably while for spices the area is 105.5 hectares. He said 564 green houses of 80 sq tonnes have been established at a cost of Rs 45.915 lakh. Under the centrally sponsored micro management production incentives to the tune of Rs 2.384 lakh have been provided for production of 1589.60 quintals of rice and Rs 17.866 lakh for production of 11456 quintals of wheat seeds during the current year, the minister said. The Minister for Horticulture Mohammad Dilawar Mir replying to a question informed the House that fruit mandies would be constructed in areas devoid of such facilities and added that attention is also being paid towards provision of cold storage facilities to the growers and forwarding agents.
