Asia Society and The Goldman Sachs Foundation to Award First-Ever Prizes to Student ‘Global Citizens

By: Bollywood Movie Review

Asia Society and The Goldman Sachs Foundation will award prizes to youth who have demonstrated an in-depth understanding of key issues in international affairs and the global economy. Three high school students will receive scholarship prizes on December 6, 2006 at Asia Society’s Annual Gala Dinner. One grand prize winner will be awarded $7,500 and two other winners will each receive $5,000. The youth prizes are part of the annual Goldman Sachs Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education, which were created in 2003 to raise awareness of the growing importance of international knowledge and skills for U.S. students.

High school students from across the country responded to global citizenship and global economic challenges for the chance to win one of the scholarships. Inspired by quotes from Mahatma Gandhi and Thomas Friedman, students created audio or video documentaries or wrote essays on topics as various as Darfur, fresh water access, nuclear weapons in Iran and North Korea, technology, disease prevention, poverty, HIV/AIDS, intellectual property, and immigration. The students’ submissions honed in on issues of importance to people around the world, offering thoughtful, serious, and widely varying solutions to some of the world’s most vexing problems. The entries were evaluated by a panel of judges that included Lisa Ling, host of National Geographic Explorer; SuChin Pak from MTV News; Milton Chen, Executive Director, The George Lucas Educational Foundation; and Charlotte Frank, Senior Vice President, Research and Development, McGraw-Hill Education.

“This year’s awards process reveals that American youth are concerned with what is happening around the world and are becoming truly engaged global citizens,” said Vishakha N. Desai, President of Asia Society. “Entrants demonstrated the knowledge and communications skills that are vital in preparing for a successful future in an increasingly interconnected world.”

“Preparing today's students for success and eventual leadership in the global economy is the single most important task facing U.S. education," said Stephanie Bell-Rose, President of The Goldman Sachs Foundation. "If young Americans are to take on challenging global leadership roles in the future, they must possess a deep understanding and appreciation for other cultures, geography, history, and languages. The Prizes program is designed to show students that international education can be challenging, interesting, and relevant in preparing them for the world."

In addition to the scholarship awards for the youth winners, four additional prizes of $25,000 each will be awarded to schools, states, and media/technology groups that are bringing the world into America’s classrooms. These prizes, to be announced in spring 2007, will recognize creative and effective programs and leaders who are integrating intellectually rigorous international content into schools, fostering effective teaching and learning of world languages, and bringing the world to America’s youth in exciting new ways through the use of media and technology.
