Aziz Government faces no-trust motion in Pakistan National Assembly

By: Islamabad News

The National Assembly (NA) on Tuesday will have a final discussion and debate on the Opposition's no-confidence motion against the Shaukat Aziz Government.

The no-trust motion containing the signatures of 137 members and accompanied by a 500-page chargesheet against the Government, was tabled for discussion last week.

The Aziz Government is the first government whose corruption was “proved” in the Supreme Court, PPP Deputy Parliamentary leader Raja Pervez Ashraf told The News.

The way the Government has tried to stop the Opposition from moving a full text of the chargesheet in the National Assembly showed that it was afraid of facing facts, Ashraf added.

There also a possibility that the killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in an Army operation carried out over the weekend would dominate House proceedings. There are reports that the joint opposition might walk out of the House over it.

The pattern of debate has not been finalized as yet, as Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain wants to follow precedent and procedure adopted by former NA Speaker Malik Meraj Khalid when a no-trust motion was moved against Benazir Bhutto in 1989.

Ruling out the opposition’s demand that all no-trust motion movers be allowed to speak, the Speaker has insisted that only four members should speak and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz be allowed to defend himself.

The speaker had rejected the opposition’s demand to produce detained Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi in the House for voting on the motion. This issue is also likely to come up for discussion.

The opposition’s demand for holding secret balloting on the no-confidence motion had been rejected and the Government and hinted on a division of votes to decide the fate of no-confidence motion.
