Bellco Credit Union Hires Colorado Filmmaker for Ad Campaign

By: Arts & Entertainment News

Bellco Credit Union decided to bring cinéma vérité to its next movie theater commercial with the help of a Colorado independent filmmaker.

Bellco Credit Union, sponsor of the 2007 Starz Denver Film Festival, hired filmmaker William Fisher to create a cinematic commercial for its new advertising campaign, “No ATM Fees, Anybody, Any Card.”

Fisher has a short film featured in the film festival that runs Nov. 8-18. This is Fisher’s second time in the Denver Film Festival. His film, “Whirling Dervish,” also was featured in the Aspen FilmFest this year.

“Bellco Credit Union is delighted to sponsor the Colorado Filmmakers program at the Starz Denver Film Festival. We wanted to show our support of cinema and local independent filmmakers goes beyond event sponsorships when we hired Bill Fisher to produce our commercial,” said Laura Higgins, Director of Marketing at Bellco Credit Union. “We gave Bill an overview of the message we wanted to convey regarding Bellco’s elimination of all ATM fees, and he merged it with his creative vision. The result is a cinema commercial that feels like a short film. Plus, it’s really funny.”

The 30-second ad, which begins running Nov. 9 in a dozen large movie theater complexes in the Denver metro area, was filmed in a barbershop near Fisher’s home by Glenwood Springs. It shows how ATM fees can quickly clip away at customers’ money just like a bad barber can clip away too much hair.

Fisher, 41, wrote and edited documentaries for A&E television early in his career, but put filmmaking on hold while he worked as a welder for a party planner in New York. After moving to Colorado, Fisher became a blacksmith making ornamental metal work for custom-designed homes in the Aspen area.

He picked up a camera again a few years ago and has had much success on the film festival circuit.

“The coolest part is seeing the audience reaction when you’ve done everything for a film yourself,” Fisher said. “I enjoy editing the most, because it provides endless possibilities. It’s like Hitchcock said, ‘you can literally change an entire film with editing.’ You can change a comedy into a drama. Some people hate it, but I love it. And it was great to work with Bellco – you can tell they really support the arts in Colorado.”

Fisher’s short film tells a story about a little girl, played by his 10-year-old daughter, who reads a letter from the past.

His film airs Nov. 10 and 11 during the Starz Denver Film festival.
