Bill to correct spelling of 'Lohar'

By: India News

A Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha today to correct the spelling of 'Lohar' (blacksmith) who fall under the category of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Bihar and are not a Scheduled Tribe.

The Bill has been necessitated as there has been consistent attempt by the Lohar caste to be treated as Scheduled Tribe and to obtain the constitutional benefits meant for genuine STs by taking benefit of the Hindi version of the Amendment Act where the caste has been wrongly spelt.

This was mentioned in the statement of objects and reasons attached to the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order Amendment Bill, 2006.
