Kumon Math and Reading Centers are opening their doors in October to families in search of recommended book titles for their children. The company is offering its list of 350 titles, designed to help parents select books that enhance their children’s appreciation and understanding of the English language and develop a lifelong love for reading. “We encourage children and their parents to read daily,” said Mary Mokris, Ph.D, Kumon Math and Reading Centers. “Our recommended reading list appeals to a wide spectrum of reader interests. Students can select books that match their ability, and just as importantly, match their interests.” Subjects range for all ages, from learning the alphabet and numbers to works by Judy Blume, Roald Dahl, Anne Frank and Ernest Hemingway. At least a third of the books have won literary awards from renowned organizations such as the National Book Foundation and Pulitzer. The list also highlights a section of books perfect for parents to read aloud with their younger children. A number of books have multicultural themes. Readers can visit far-away lands, learn about other cultures and different ways of life. “The more students read, the more their vocabulary, understanding of sentence structure and overall comprehension improves,” Dr. Mokris added. “It is our hope that children develop a love for reading as well as broaden their knowledge of the world around them.” For more information about the Kumon Reading program or for a list of nearby Kumon Centers visit: www.kumon.com or call 800-ABC-MATH.
