Chattanooga State Technical Community College (Chattanooga State) in Chattanooga, Tennessee and PHNS in Dallas, Texas have reached a tentative agreement to work together. PHNS selected Chattanooga State, the only accredited Health Information Management (“HIM”) program in the Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama tri-state area, to ensure that students graduating from Chattanooga State’s program acquire the necessary high degree of proficiency to secure immediate employment upon graduation. Chattanooga State’s HIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Information and Information Management Education (CAHIM). According to Chick Young, President and Chief Executive Officer of PHNS, “The Chattanooga State program offers a natural foundation for a successful collaboration to strengthen the Chattanooga HIM workforce and create new job opportunities.” The collaboration between Chattanooga State and PHNS will mean that students in the HIM program receive additional professional practice experiences not previously available to them. Chattanooga State will work closely with PHNS to broaden the students’ experience with a curriculum that meets the needs of a complex, evolving healthcare environment, and by utilizing the same technology in the classroom experience that they will use in the work environment. PHNS will recruit students directly from Chattanooga State’s HIM program to serve customers throughout the United States on PHNS’ technology driven remote platforms. HIM professionals in Tennessee have an average annual salary of just over $57,000. PHNS currently employees over 1,400 professionals, most of whom have extensive healthcare provider experience and expertise. PHNS’ HIM Division currently provides interim staff placement, coding, auditing, education, release of information, records management and transcription services for over 385 healthcare customers. All services are offered on an “as needed” basis or on a full service outsourcing relationship.
