Veteran Congress leader and industrialist Ramaswamy Udayar died here today following age-related health problems. He was 90 and is survived by four sons and a daughter. Udayar was the owner of Shevorays Hotel at Yercadu and two catering colleges at Salem and Yercadu. He also owned tea estates and public transport buses besides a textile mill at Salem. He had been the treasurer of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress for a long time, party sources said. A close confidant of former Congress president late K Kamaraj, Udayar was a member of the Congress Trust that has a lot of assets in Tamil Nadu. Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Union Minister of State for Statistics G K Vasan and Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Veerpandi S Arumugham had recently called on him at the hospital where he was admitted. Devadas, one of his sons, was a former member of the Lok Sabha.
