Six years ago, Cal Ripken Jr. hung up his glove and walked away from the baseball diamond—taking a small piece of every Oriole fan with him. In the July issue of Baltimore magazine, readers will receive a special dose of the Iron Man in a commemorative section in honor of Cal’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 29, 2007. The supplement includes a collection of thoughts, memories, and images that illustrate the enormous impact the legend from Aberdeen had on Baltimore, baseball, and America. Washington Post sportswriter Dave Sheinin ponders why Cal’s career meant so much to so many people and those who know Cal best share memories, insights, and observations. Additionally, the magazine’s editors offer an insiders guide to Cooperstown with tips on how to make the most out of the journey north. “As if we didn’t love Cal enough already, people are going to love him even more after reading this special supplement,” said Max Weiss, senior editor for Baltimore magazine. In addition to baseball greats Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, and Brooks Robinson, others who share their favorite moments and memories of Cal include former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and famed broadcaster Bob Costas. The July issue of Baltimore magazine, which released on June 18, 2007, is available by subscription and can also be purchased at newsstands throughout the Baltimore area. Baltimore magazine is the area’s most popular guide to the best of the greater Baltimore region. Its “Best of Baltimore,” “Top Doctors,” and “Best Restaurants” features have become signatures of the magazine, and Baltimore’s monthly exploration of politics, food, business, lifestyle, and the arts has earned numerous awards, including several City and Regional Magazine Awards (CRMA) and Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) awards. This year, Baltimore magazine celebrates its 100th anniversary and is the country’s oldest continuously published city/regional magazine.
