Cosmos Publishing makes its ebooks available through its website www.cosmosebooks.com. The latest book added to be added is “Animal Intelligence” by D. R. Sharma. It is now available in PDF format for viewing online or downloading. Man being at the highest stage of evolution is automatically assumed to have the highest developed mind and intelligence. However, there is no rational basis for this assumption. Every pet owner can testify to the high intelligence of dogs and cats. Looking at many other species of animals we find uncanny intelligence in many. The occurrence of such intelligence in animals is astounding especially in view of the fact that unlike man they do not have resources of accumulated knowledge at their disposal. This book discusses consciousness and intelligence in animals by giving examples of insects and birds. Ants are among the oldest inhabitants of the earth. Yet they have a well-organized social pattern of community life. They are nature’s civil engineers. The inner structure of their mounds resembles a planned metropolis having different sectors for different purposes and interconnecting ‘highways’. They are meticulously clean creatures and have a separate section for garbage disposal. Honeybees have a social pattern of life just like ants. The honeycomb is almost an engineering marvel. The hexagonal structure is the most optimized structure for strength and space utilization. The honeybees also have a unique way of communicating information about the sources of nectar and pollen through a series of dance patterns. This dance language has been a subject of investigation for scientists in different fields ranging from biology to quantum physics. The process of making and storing honey is as perfect as can be. Spiders are perhaps the oldest insects on this planet and are cunning designers. The design of the spider web, especially the orb web is astonishing to say the least. The design with its ingenious prey capture aspects requires a lot of thinking and planning. The silk produced by the spider organically exceeds in tensile strength and stretching capability any material made by man. Although the silk production itself does not involve any intelligence, the use of different types of silk in different parts of the web does involve the mental capability. The last example is a small bird baya commonly known as the weaverbird. Suspended from tree branches, its nest is an architectural masterpiece. It makes the nest by weaving thin blades of grass or strips of leaves into a unique structure. The design and location of the nest are based on careful planning for safety of the eggs and for security against predators. There are two other ebooks available on the website. “Where Is God” traces the development of the concept of God and shows how a general concept can be made consistent with views from ancient philosophies as well as with those of modern science. “Nature, Science, and Spirituality” is a collection of articles on philosophy, science, and nature. These books are offered free. Contact: Cosmos Publishing P. O. Box 90671 Austin, TX 78709-0671
