Defending champ advances at Strasbourg

Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain Thursday advanced at the Strasbourg International Tennis Tournament in France.

Vaidisova, the second seed, was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, winner over No. 7 Jie Zheng of China.

The fourth-seeded Medina Garrigues, who is the defending champion, beat unseeded Elena Vesnina of Russia, 6-2, 6-4.

Other winners were eighth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, who beat unseeded Na Li of China, 7-5, 6-1, and unseeded Shuai Peng of China, who beat another non-seed, Martina Muller of Germany, 7-5, 6-4.

In the semifinals, Vaidisova, who is No. 18 in the latest world rankings, will be tested by Jankovic; and Medina Garrigues meets Shuai.

The tournament's winner on Saturday will claim $28,000.
