Muslim scholars and clerics today demanded amendment of the Constitution to pave the way for reservation in jobs for Dalits of the community. Shia cleric Kalbe Jawwad, All India Muslim United Morcha vice-president M A Siddique and the imam of Tile Wali Masjid Fazlur Rehman Waizi Nadwi asked Muslim organisations to exert pressure on the Central government to amend the Constitution, while addressing a seminar on the issue here. "Article 341 of the Constitution imposed restrictions on reservation for Dalit Muslims which must be removed," Jawwad said. He said if Buddhists and Sikhs could be included, so could Dalit Muslims. Siddique said that reservation for Dalit Muslims was essential for the upliftment of the community and asked Muslim clerics and organisations to unite in demanding removal of Article 341. He said secular political parties should make their stand clear on the issue so that Muslims could decide about whether to support them in the coming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
