Paula Abdul is a singer and choreographer who started her life as a poor child from a broken home. She began dreaming about song and dance at the age of four when she saw Gene Kelly on television performing "Singing in the Rain". Paula began taking ballet lessons for free at age seven by cleaning the mirrors and floors of the dance studio. Her mother did not know about the lessons. Paula Abdul began choreographing musicals before she took her first dance class. When she was five years old, she conducted childhood friends from her condominium, inviting the adults to see the show. While her mother was cooking, Paula would practice her moves by holding onto the kitchen sink. Her mother was always encouraging, but in a tough sort of way. Her mother would remind Paula of the heartache she had seen while working as a personal assistant to Billy Wilder. Girls' dreams were frequently shattered. Paula knew if she was to be successful, she'd have to find success on her own. Paula Abdul received a dance scholarship to Juilliard while she was still in high school. She traveled to New York with a friend and quickly realized big city life wasn't for her. She wanted a career in dance, but she didn't have an agent. She was teaching for cheerleading camps, so she decided to audition for a spot as a Laker Girl for the Los Angeles Lakers even though she knew she didn't have the typical body they would be looking for. Out of nearly 1000 auditioning, Paula Abdul was chosen for one of only 12 spots as a Laker Girl. In her rookie year, Paula was asked to take over and form a dance squad. When season ticket holders saw the changes Paula had made to the squad, they started calling her for corporate events. Paula Abdul eventually landed movie roles such as "The African Anteater Dance" seen in "Can't Buy Me Love" with Patrick Dempsey, and at the age of 17, she began choreographing for the Jackson Five. Paula won a choreography award for her work with ZZ Top and Duran Duran. She went on to work with most of the major recording artists of that era choreographing their tours, videos, and live performances. Paula Abdul finally got to work with her idol Gene Kelly during the last two years of his life. At the same time, she choreographed the Academy Awards and received an Emmy nomination. In secret, not wanting to give up her day job as a choreographer, Paula began making her mark on recording industry only to become a superstar all over again. One of her biggest hits was a song called "Straight Up." In 1995, Paula Abdul disappeared. She paid off the media not to tell the world about a plane crash she was in. She knew she was in bad shape and would need time to focus on her health without the public knowing. Today, Paula can be seen on "American Idol," a reality television show with Simon Cowell. In the show, thousands of singers audition for just one winning spot as a new American icon, or "American Idol." Paula, the "judge with a heart" gives constructive criticism in a positive way unlike Simon, who is at times extremely harsh.
