Reckon So Productions and Ghost Robot present the DVD release of “Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox”--an 88-minute critically acclaimed documentary about uniting mankind, one bottle of soap at a time--directed by filmmaker Sara Lamm. The DVD hits the street on Tuesday, November 20th, after a U.S. and Canadian limited theatrical run with Balcony Releasing. The DVD is available exclusively on the film’s website, www.magicsoapbox.com, for $25.00, and will also roll out in select retail locations throughout the winter season. Lamm says, "This is a dramatically charged father and son story that illuminates the mystery behind one of the great enigmas of the modern green movement--Dr. Bronner's iconographic soap label--and its myriad of meanings." The film--which snagged RottenTomatoes.com’s elusive “100% Fresh” rating--captures four generations of soapmakers and an inspiring legacy of the counterculture’s favorite eco-friendly cleanser. Critics have raved about this “bittersweet story of a family and the surprising effects a crusading eccentric can have on them.” (Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times) Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says that the film "offers enough bizarreness to earn it genuine cult status." The DVD has eco-friendly packaging and “Extras” include an exclusive interview with Dr. Bronner’s grandson, David Bronner, president of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, as well as a special short documentary about the company’s fair trade olive oil project with Israeli and Palestinian farmers. With a background in multimedia performance art and radio documentary, Lamm moves the story back-and-forth between archival film footage of Dr. Bronner and recent digital video of 70-year old son Ralph Bronner as he carries out his father’s messages of hope for a unified world. The film features archival footage of Dr. Bronner (1908 - 1997) and fourth wife Gladys Bronner, late son Jim Bronner (who died from cancer in ‘98) and the late Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panthers. Current footage is shot by Lamm and Andrew Nagata. The film is directed and produced by Lamm, produced by Zachary Mortensen and Cheri Anderson, executive produced by Matt Aselton and edited by Katy Finch with original music by Pierre DeGaillande
