The crucial meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers on raising the cap on the number of Special Economic Zones has been postponed by a day to tomorrow.
"The meeting could not be held today because of pressing engagements of some of the Ministers who are part of the EGoM. The meeting will now be held tomorrow," officials said.
Indications are that the EGoM may consider increasing the cap from the present 150. The Board of Approval has already cleared 150 SEZs and 200 applications are pending with it.
It is not yet clear whether the cap for all types of SEZs would be raised to 300 or have a cap on only IT SEZs as 94 of the 150 SEZs cleared so far are from the IT sector.
