The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) will meet today to decide on how many Special Economic Zones (SEZs) the country needs.
The meeting was to be held on Tuesday, but was postponed to Wednesday owing to the prior engagements of Ministers.
The number of special economic zones is likely to be raised from 150 to 300 following the enthusiastic response to the setting up of these institutions by manufacturing and services companies.
Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who heads the EGoM on SEZs, had earlier capped the number of such institutions at 150.
The approving board has 200 applications pending with it.
