Five children succumbed to encephalitis in the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh today, taking the toll in the dreaded brain fever to 40 since April this year, a senior official said. The children belonged to Mahrajganj, Kushinagar and Gorakhpur, Additional Director (Health) Dr D P Mishra said adding, 11 new patients suffering from the disease have been admitted to the B R D Medical College here. A total number of 56 patients died due to the disease since January 2006, he said. Only 12 cases till now had been confirmed as Japanese encephalitis, while the rest were viral encephalitis caused by an unknown virus, Mishra added. He said 67 patients of the brain fever are still being treated in the B R D hospital. Meanwhile, an expert team of doctors from Sanjay Gandhi PG Institute, Lucknow will soon reach here to study the type of virus behind the encephalitis outbreak. The National Institute of Virology, Pune would also be approached for verifying the strain of virus causing brain fever. The team of experts from SGPGI would suggest ways of treatment for fever cases that were tested negative for Japanese encephalitis, Mishra said.
