The very vocal Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee Tuesday stunned Lok Sabha when she mistakenly credited Rabindranath Tagore as the poet who penned the national song, 'Vande Mataram'. Banerjee, who sought to intervene when the house was plunged into pandemonium over the issue of singing of 'Vande Mataram' in schools on Sep 7 to commemorate the centenary of the song, said: "'Vande Mataram' is our national song. It is written by Rabindranath Tagore." Banerjee's remark was initially not heard by many due to the general uproar. However, she requested Speaker Somnath Chatterjee for "a minute" to intervene on the issue and again named Tagore as the author of 'Vande Mataram'. While other MPs sat stunned, Prabodh Panda of the Communist Party of India (CPI) said: "It is not written by Tagore. He has written our national anthem (Jana Gana Mana) and 'Vande Mataram' was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee." However, an unfazed Banerjee continued: "It does not matter who has written it. We do not look into who has written the national anthem, national song or 'Saare Jahan Se Achchha' (by Mohammed Iqbal) - whether he (the poet) is a Hindu or a Muslim. We all love the songs." Banerjee added: "I will request the members not to divide the house on this issue."
