The MK Gandhi Institute for Non-violence plans to host a Day of Peace and Reconciliation and Remembrance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on Sep 11. The day not only marks the 5th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon, World Trade Centre and Pennsylvania but also the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's first peaceful non-violent protest in South Africa. "On 9/11 let us gather to change the way we conduct ourselves. Let us commemorate this day as a Day of Peace, Reconciliation and Remembrance with prayers and music. Let us follow the path Gandhi showed us 100 years ago on this very day: a path of non-violence to right wrongs," said Arun Gandhi, Founder of the MK Gandhi Institute for Non-violence. The inter-faith, non-partisan, presentation will consist of speeches by Arun Gandhi, a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, family representatives of 9/11 victims, and Congressman John Lewis, a leading Civil Rights activist. There will also be performances by musicians Ericka Ovette, Broto Roy, and others, as also prayers for peace by representatives of major faiths. Krishna K. Roy, chairman of the MK Gandhi Institute for Non-violence, said, "The world is weary of war and hate; we must dedicate ourselves to peace and honour the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. King and other leaders of non-violence. Every individual counts and we can and need to become soldiers in the force of peace."
