Energy firms from China, the US, the UK and Germany have envinced interest in India's proposal to set up seven ultra mega power projects, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. "We have received good response (to the tender inviting participation in ultra mega power projects)," Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said replying to supplementaries during Question Hour. He said queries and proposals had been received from China, the US, the UK and Germany. Government has taken an initiative for facilitating development of ultra mega power generation projects of about 4000 MW capacity each, using super critical technology, at pit head or sites under the tariff based competitive bidding guidelines, Shinde said. "Each project envisages an investment of at least Rs 16,000 crore," he said. He said the National Electricity Policy provides for access to electricity to all households in next five years and overcoming energy and peaking shortages by 2012. Besides, it provides for increasing per capita availability of electricity to over 1000 units by 2012. Shinde said theft and pilferage of electricity in Delhi has come down from 45-50 per cent to 25 per cent. West Bengal has also done commendable job in reducing losses arising from theft and pilferage of power.
