Religious minorities in Gujarat have said amendments were made to an existing anti-conversion law last week to avoid further polarisation in the communally sensitive state. Hindu activists, who accuse Christian missionaries of forcibly converting Hindus to Christianity, have come out in support of the new law. Four of the 29 states, ruled by the BJP or its allies, have announced these anti-conversion laws. Meanwhile, a Roman Catholic pastor in Madhya Pradesh has said that he was attacked recently while holding a religious meeting at his house. "On September 10, when we had a peaceful little gathering at my house, 30-40 men suddenly came over. They were very violent and left me with serious injuries," Father Jonathan said. Christian activists have accused the BJP-ruled states of promoting religious discrimination. "What can you call this but terrorism? If Muslims are constantly branded as fundamentalists and terrorists, what else should these Hindu activists be called? How can we ever defend ourselves against the Hindu majority if they choose to behave this way?" asked Indira Iyengar, the President of the Madhya Pradesh Christian Association.
