The Haryana government will soon appoint new 'gram sachivs' (panchayat secretaries) who will have a maximum of two villages under their jurisdiction, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dharambir said today. Addressing a district level Panchayati Raj Sammelan in Ambala city, he said the honorarium of Rs 1,000 per month announced for 'Sarpanches' (village heads) would be given out of state exchequer and not from the income of the panchayats. Formal orders in this regard would be issued shortly and the arrears of previous months would also be paid, he said and announced that the government would also convene a state-level conference of zila parishad and panchayat members. He said panchayats were being empowered to undertake development works for up to Rs 3 lakh, the funds for which would be deposited directly in their accounts. Dharambir said that in view of the shortage of engineers in Rural Development Department, it has been decided to enroll retired and unemployed degree holders and they would be paid two per cent of the plan project. A sum of Rs 60 crore has been released for repair of buildings of schools and the 'chaupals' of members belonging to Schduled Castes and Backward Classes were being repaired on priority basis.
