The West Bengal Government has sounded a high alert throughout the state as police tightened security cover and Border Security Force (BSF) mounted vigil along the India-Bangladesh border following the terrorist attack in Hyderabad. Official sources today said a high level meeting held at the state secretariat reviewed the situation as security had been beefed up for protection of vital installations, including railway stations and important bridges. While pre-emptive measures were being taken for the safety of passengers of long distance trains, a special warning had also been sounded against any possible terrorist threat to public places, including shopping malls and important markets. Theatre hall owners had been asked to keep a check on access of people to auditorium while other places of entertainment were also under security scanner. BSF sources said an extra caution was being maintained against any infiltration from across the 1,150 km international border with Bangladesh, of which 620 km was porous and riverine. Altogether 12 members of Bangladesh-based terrorist groups had been arrested in the border areas over the past one year as they tried to make West Bengal a transit point for carrying out terrorist activities elsewhere in the country, the sources added.
