Himachal to give more relief to victims of anti-Sikh riots

Acting on the recommendations of the Nanavati commission, the Himachal government today decided to give an additional relief of Rs 192.59 lakhs to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The amount payable to 326 victims would be in addition to the compensation of Rs 21.07 lakh already paid to them.

The state-level committee set up by the government under the chairmanship of the chief secretary would take effective steps to implement the enhanced compensation.

There was only one death reported from Kullu district during the riots and the family of the deceased would be paid ex-gratia grant of Rs 3.50 Lakh.

As many as 202 families were affected in Mandi district, followed by 95 in Kangra and 29 in Shimla. As per the cabinet decision, 89 families from Mandi, 86 families from Kangra district, nine each from Solan and Sirmaur and five families from Hamirpur district which had already been compensation would also be given enhanced relief.
