Terming as "insensitive" the court-ordered demolition of constructions along the banks of Yamuna, leaders of the Hindu and Sikh communities today announced re-building places of worship damaged in the drive. "The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee will bear the cost of reconstruction of temples damaged in the drive, while the Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti (ABSS) will rebuild gurdwaras," DSGMC President Paramjit Singh Sarna told reporters here. Flanked by ABSS General Secretary Swami Hansdass, Sarna said DSGMC and ABSS will jointly rebuild mosques and other places of worship damaged in the drive. Criticising the court-ordered demolitions along the banks of Yamuna as "insensitive", Bhartiya Jan Shakti President Uma Bharti said the government should make plans to beautify the riverfront without demolishing places of worship. She cited the development of Nigambodh Ghat crematorium as an example of beautifying the riverfront without affecting the environment in a major way. Majnu Ka Tilla gurdwara and a temple were damaged in the demolition drive which led to flaring of tempers in both the communities. This prompted the Centre to announce that religious places will not be touched in the demolition drive. Former Delhi Chief Minister Madanlal Khurana, who had been undertaking the 'Dharama Yudha Yatra' across the capital, said he had a meeting with Union Minister for Urban Development S Jaipal Reddy, who assured him that places of worship will be spared from the demolition drive.
