Houston Mayor Bill White has joined Bellaire Mayor Cindy Siegel, County Judge Robert Eckels, and all members of the Harris County Commissioners Court, in honoring the Rotary Club of Bellaire Southwest Houston for building broad-based community action coalitions to improve health and vaccination coverage in the nation’s fourth-largest city. In a Proclamation issued late last week, White cited the Rotary Club’s volunteerism and innovative civic initiatives as significant contributions to the life-quality and education of Houston residents. White complimented in particular the organizers of Rotary’s second annual immunization clinic and fair, held July 22, 2006, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, then declared Saturday as Rotary Immunization Day in the City of Houston, Texas. “This recognition is especially heartening during our Golden Anniversary Year,” said club president-elect Nan Wagoner, who chaired the 2006 clinic and health-awareness drive. Bellaire’s Mayor, Cindy Siegel, called Rotary’s immunization-coalition a model for beneficial community partnerships and commended the Club for focusing its free vaccination program on the Gulfton SuperNeighborhood, which has been identified as Houston’s most densely populated and ethnically diverse community. This year’s inoculation clinic and fair prompted Siegel to declare a Bellaire/Southwest Houston Rotary Immunization Day in the City of Bellaire and read a congratulatory proclamation at a recent meeting of the Bellaire City Council. “If you put Rotary’s motto of Service above self into practice, it’s a great leveler,” said Wagoner. “There aren’t too many other places you’ll see bank presidents, lawyers, police chiefs, and even a city manager, working together preparing food, entertaining little children, cleaning up - - we all want to improve vaccination coverage and health in our town.”. “It’s really satisfying to see direct results from project funds in such an immediate way,” said club vice president Bernie Satterwhite. "There’s just no substitute for a hands-on volunteer program.” Rotarian Satterwhite serves as city manager for Bellaire. Harris County Judge Robert Eckels praised Rotary’s active role in improving the health and welfare of area children, and Harris County Commissioners El Franco Lee, Sylvia Garcia, Steve Radack, and Jerry Eversole joined Eckels in issuing a formal Resolution highlighting the group’s donations of funds and volunteer services over the past 50 years. Eckels, who presides over Commissioners Court, is the only member elected by all the citizens of Harris County and earlier this year presented the Dome City Award to South Texas' District 5890 Rotarians for their support in managing the Incident Command Center in the wake of Hurricane Katrina last Fall. BSWH Rotary’s health-coalition partners this year include Holy Ghost Catholic Church, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the International Services Division of the YMCA, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities, the East End Healthy Children’s Collaborative, and the Westland YMCA. Companies and organizations contributing goods, services, or volunteers to the Gulfton immunization clinic included: Christus Southwest Community Health Center, City of Houston Agency of Aging, Contemporary Dental Services, Don Beckner Insurance, Financial Freedom Reverse Mortgages, Jay Ginsburg Law Offices, Golden Benefits/Wealth Design Group, Keller Williams Realty, Kwik Kopy-Bellaire Blvd, Nurses of M.D. Anderson and Methodist Hospitals, Rieger and Associates CPA firm, Select Care of Texas, Tradition Bank-Bellaire, Village News/Southwest News Publications, Wagoner Burgert LLP Law Offices, and Westbury Christian School. The Rotary Club of Bellaire Southwest Houston is one of 31,000 Rotary clubs in more than 165 countries that provides humanitarian services and promotes goodwill around the globe.
