A strong plea for providing reservation to economically backward people, irrespective of their community, was made by a Janata Dal (U) member in the Lok Sabha today. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Prabhunath Singh said providing such a reservation would not create any social unrest as was witnessed after the announcement of quota for Other Backward Classes in elite educational institutions. Singh said if the economically weak in all sections of society, whether among the forward or backward classes, were given such a facility it would lead to social justice. The Zero Hour also saw members raising other issues of local and regional importance. Mamata Banerjee (Trinamool Congress) sought a special package for the underdeveloped regions of north Bengal and north-eastern states. Replying to her demand, Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunshi said a memorandum has been presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a package may be announced soon. Tejaswini Ramesh (Cong) drew the government's attention towards drinking water problems in Bangalore. V Radhakrishna (CPM) asked the government to amend the Electricity Act, 2003, to stop unbundling of state electricity Boards into different entities.
