Despite a request by Supreme Court Bar Association, the Kashmir High Court Bar Association boycotted the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the state High Court held here today. The KHCBA decided to boycott the celebrations in the wake of, what it called, "unabated human rights violations and sexual exploitation of girls in the (Kashmir) valley." The decision was conveyed in writing by KHCBA President Mian Abdul Qayoom to the Registrar General of the High Court. The SCBA, in a letter to Qayoom yesterday, had requested him to reconsider the decision of staying away from the celebrations which began today. "An independent bar, dehors of any political affiliations, is always the strength of lawyers and a watchdog for the system to which, we owe all our loyalty. We request you to reconsider your decision and participate in the functions," SCBA honorary secretary K C Kaushik said. Kaushik said Diamond Jubilee celebrations were not anybody's individual affair or even that of the judges. "It is a celebration for the very justice delivery system which has stood the test of the turbulent times in every state, more so in Jammu and Kashmir." The SCBA wishes to have a dialogue with KHCBA on crucial issues concerning the legal fraternity and for strengthening of justice delivery system, he said. Several bar associations from district courts and other subordinate courts of the valley, besides the Jammu Bar Association took part in the celebrations.
