As they observe the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between them, Laos and India, jointly organised a cultural performance here, depicting the rich art, music and traditions of the two countries. The performance -- held over the weekend -- included various folk dances from both the countries. An exhibition of things like traditional Indian attire and decorative jewellery worn by Indian women was also a part of the event. Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Bouagheun Xaphouvong, various foreign diplomats, representatives of different organisations and local residents attended the event, which was organised by the Lao Ministry of Information and Culture and the Embassy of India. India and the Lao PDR established diplomatic relations in 1955, soon after the visit of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954 and the formation of the International Commission for Supervision and Control (ICSC). India was the Chairman of the ICSC from its inception until 1975, the year that Lao People's Democratic Republic came into existence. A common struggle against colonial powers by both the countries further reinforced the ties between India and Laos, and commonalities of views on major international issues have also laid a firm foundation for evolving mutually beneficial bilateral relations over these years.
