The funeral of Babaji Swaran Singh, the head priest of a gurdwara - Sikh temple - in Lincolnshire in east Midlands, will be held Friday. Singh, 87, served as head priest of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Scunthorpe. Born at Lyalpur in undivided India in 1919, he arrived in England in 1990. Singh served in the British Army in India as a vehicle fitter and won several awards. Hardev Singh, a close friend of Singh, said: "The door was open at all times, allowing the congregation the benefit of his vast knowledge of the holy scriptures, ensuring excellent progress of the temple under his leadership. "He always emphasised that the true meaning of the word Sikh was 'to learn' and the reason we have been blessed with this human life is so that we can learn and make spiritual progress." "The community of Scunthorpe has lost a very easily recognisable, wise and positive member but has benefited from his sincere contribution," the friend added.
