Bombay High Court today released Manish Khatau, the son of a city-based industrialist, on bail hours after a sessions court remanded him to a day in judicial custody in a rash driving case. It issued a warrant against Khatau after the state filed an appeal challenging his acquittal by the sessions court. Khatau was charged with causing grevious injuries to a traffic policeman last year. In accordance with the warrant, he surrendered to police, which produced him before the sessions court at Sewri which did not have the case papers and asked him to submit them tomorrow. The lower court then remanded the youth in judicial custody for a day and said it would hear his bail application tomorrow. "After the sessions court's direction, we approached the High Court which granted him bail," Girish Kulkarni, counsel for Khatau, said. Manish, the son of industrialist Mahendra Khatau, was arrested on August 14, 2005 after the car he was allegedly driving rammed into a barricade at Marine Drive in South Mumbai hitting an on-duty policeman and severely injuring him. He was also accused of attempt to murder but acquitted of the charge by a sessions court in April.
