Pakistan today expressed hope that the new anti-terror mechanism agreed with India would work successfully. Indian High Commissioner and Foreign Secretary-designate Shivshankar Menon who made a farewell call on Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, said the premier spoke about the need for building strong relations between the two countries by resolving issues. Menon said Aziz expressed hope that the new anti-terror mechanism that has been agreed between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pervez Musharraf in their meeting in Havana, Cuba, would work successfully. Menon had made a farewell call on Musharraf before the Pakistani President left for his foreign tour. The Indian High Commissioner who had accompanied Singh during his visit to Havana returned here yesterday. In his three-year stint here, the Indo-Pak ties aided by political reconciliation starting with former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's visit in 2004, were transformed into cordial if not very friendly ties. During the three rounds of the Composite Dialogue processes, the two countries made headway in initiating CBMs as well as achieved considerable progress on contentious issue like Kashmir even though the process was on and often affected by the incidents of terrorism in India, specially the Mumbai bomb blasts which were largely believed to be originated from here. Menon was largely credited for working on a number of initiatives including the latest mechanism to curb terrorism between the two countries.
