The death toll in rain-related incidents in West Bengal today rose to 25 even as the downpour continued unabated in southern districts. South 24 Parganas district accounted for 21 dead and East and West Midnapore two each, reports from the districts said. Nearly 41,000 dwellings were levelled and standing crops on thousands of acres were destroyed by the storm and rain. Finance minister Ashim Dasgupta said the toll might go up with reports trickling in from remote areas. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, however, put the number of deaths at nineteen. The Finance minister said a population of six lakh had been affected by the rains and storm. With no let up in the rains, he said the state of alertness would continue in the south Bengal districts. To help the administration of affected districts in carrying out relief and reconstruction work, the state government today sanctioned an additional Rs 4 crore (totalling Rs 8.50 crore since yesterday). The met office said the entire Gangetic West Bengal lay under a depression that formed out of a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. It said that yesterday's low pressure area today intensified further and lay as a depression over Jharkhand and the neighbourhood with its centre close to Ranchi. The system was likely to move in a northwesterly direction and heavy to very heavy rains were predicted, the met office added.
