Presidents of Pakistan and Afghanistan traded charges on Wednesday at the U.N. General Assembly over the issue of Islamabad allegedly going soft on the Taleban. While Afghan President Karzai indirectly suggested that the Taleban had found refuge in Afghanistan's immediate neighbourhood (read Pakistan), President Musharraf angrily rejected the charge by saying that Kabul should be seen to be doing more to stamp out militant threats in the region. The spat between the two leaders came even as NATO troops are battling to put down the heaviest outbreak of violence in Afghanistan since 2001. Musharaff, complained that "what President Karzai has said is not the correct thing." "I am already doing a lot in Pakistan. They need to be doing more in Afghanistan," he told reporters on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, adding that he was convinced that Taleban commander Mullah Omar and his top subordinates were in Kandahar. "He (Karzai) must realize what is the correct environment and take action accordingly in Afghanistan. The problem lies in Afghanistan and ... that has been creating problems in Pakistan for 27 years," Musharraf added, seemingly forgetting that he had just visited Kabul and had appositive round of talks with Karzai.
