National Lampoon to Release Complete Magazine Collection on DVD-Rom

By: Arts & Entertainment News

National Lampoon, Inc. (AMEX:NLN), the most widely recognized brand in comedy, today announced that it will make the entire National Lampoon magazine archive available to its fans on a single DVD-Rom. National Lampoon partnered with Graphic Imaging Technology, Inc. to create “The National Lampoon Complete Collection” on a DVD-Rom that will include every magazine ever published by National Lampoon, spanning a time period of almost 30 years. The DVD-Rom will be available through most major retail outlets including Amazon, Circuit City and other fine stores, as well as comic book retailers.

National Lampoon first published its leading edge humor magazine in April 1970, continuing until 1998. The magazine was known for its skewering and parodies of pop and counter-culture and was read by millions of fans across America. The edgy, irreverent magazine led National Lampoon into all media, with successes in radio, book publishing, live stage, and ultimately feature films. One of the funniest films of all time, “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” was based on a story in the magazine, as was the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” franchise. It was the magazine that started the development of National Lampoon into a household comedy brand.

“This is something that we’ve been asked for over and over again, it’s great to finally be releasing it to our audience. National Lampoon has a fan base in the millions, both readers of the magazine over the last 30 years, along with the new legion of online and feature film fans,” stated Daniel Laikin, National Lampoon Chief Executive Officer. “As we start to leverage our library magazine content into other areas of media, including film and television, this will give people the opportunity to look back at the material that started it all.”

“The National Lampoon Complete Collection” will be available to consumers October 26, 2007, and priced at $49.99 MSRP. The collection will be presented in a full-color readable/printable PDF format. It will also feature an OCR Search Text Engine allowing users to search text by keywords or themes.

National Lampoon’s magazine produced many iconic covers, including Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara being splattered with a cream pie (January 1972), a dog looking worriedly at a revolver being pressed to its head with the caption “If You Don’t Buy This Magazine, We’ll Kill This Dog" (January 1973), and a replica of the starving child from the cover of George Harrison’s charity album The Concert for Bangla Desh, rendered in chocolate and with a large bite taken out of its head (July 1974). In 2005, the American Society of Magazine Editors selected the “We’ll Kill This Dog” magazine cover as one of the greatest covers of the last 40 years.

National Lampoon’s magazine has also fostered some of the most notable contemporary writing and comic talents, including Doug Kenney, Chris Miller, P.J. O'Rourke, Michael O'Donoghue, Sean Kelly, Tony Hendra, and John Hughes.
