If the quantum of flowers sold is any indication, it's Valentine's Day that's celebrated with more fanfare in Pakistan as compared to New Year. Incidentally, this time the New Year day coincides with Bakr-Id. Flower vendors in Islamabad said that the two festive occasions were no comparison to the business that Valentine's Day brings along for them. They cannot help thinking about Valentine's Day - just 45 days away - when the air is filled with love and blooming business! Saifullah, a local flower vendor, said that while he made a net profit of Rs 5000 on last Valentine's Day, he did not expect the sales to touch the mark on New Year. "I made sales of Rs 60,000 on February 14 last year, with a profit of Rs 5000," the Daily Times quoted 20-year-old Saifullah as saying. He admitted having increased prices in the days leading to Eid and the New Year. Roses that were selling for Rs 70 a dozen earlier, were now sold at Rs 120. Saifullah said the price-hike was because of an "increase in prices by the wholesalers" in Lahore and Pattoki. Flower prices at Islamabad's markets vary, but a standard bouquet of roses costs Rs 150 and a flower basket is priced at Rs 170. But vendors say that increased prices do not seem to affect the buyers. "Even if we double the prices, people will still buy these flowers," said Bhola, another flower vendor.
