Normal life was affected in Manipur today by a 24-hour general strike called by a local students' organisation against last week's killing of two persons suspected by police to be Kuki extremists. Police used tear gas to disperse bandh supporters who tried to block the main road at Sanjenthong area in the heart of the state capital, but there were no reports of injuries. There were policemen and central security forces deployed at various strategic points around the capital complex. Shops, markets and other business establishments were closed, while transport services between Manipur and neighbouring states were cancelled in response to the general strike which began last midnight. Attendance in government offices was also reported below normal. Most of the roads in Imphal wore a deserted look. The general strike also affected normal life in interior districts, reports said. Official said police commandos had killed two alleged Kuki Revolutionary Army militants -- Paominlen Touthang and Lhunlal Haokip -- in an encounter here on July 26. But the Kuki Students Organisation said the two were 'innocent civilians' and called today's general strike in protest. Sources said bodies of Touthang and Haokip were still at the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital as relatives refused to collect them till a judicial inquiry was instituted into the incident.
