A nurse has received a caution for five years after being found guilty of taunting a chronically mentally ill patient in her care. A Panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) Conduct and Competence Committee, found that Michelle Dicker, 40, a mental health nurse with Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Trust, deliberately taunted her patient, telling her that "your husband's having an affair" or similar words. The Panel stated that all nurses have a duty to promote and protect the interests and dignity of their patients, as set out in the Code of Professional Conduct. By deliberately causing distress to her patient, Mrs Dicker clearly failed in this duty. The panel cautioned Mrs Dicker for the maximum period of 5 years, a sanction which will be held with Mrs Dicker's registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and will be seen by all future employers during this time. Three other charges relating to Mrs Dicker's conduct were not proven. Commenting on the panel's decision, Craig Turton, spokesman for the NMC said: "These actions showed a serious failing in Michelle Dicker's responsibilities towards a vulnerable woman in her care and a significant departure from the standards set out in the NMC code of professional conduct. Protection of the public requires that we warn Ms Dicker as to her future conduct to ensure that there is no repeat of this incident." The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the UK regulator for two professions, nursing and midwifery. The primary purpose of the NMC is protection of the public. It does this through maintaining a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses eligible to practise within the UK and by setting standards for their education, training and conduct. Currently the number of registrants exceeds 686,000. The Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 (The Order), sets out the NMC's role and responsibilities.
