A nurse from Wales, Nelson Casuga has been struck off after being convicted of the theft of the drugs Midazolam and Ketamine for his own use. A Panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) Professional Conduct Committee, found that Mr Casuga's actions undermined public trust and confidence in the profession and that, by his actions, Mr Casunga failed to uphold and enhance the good standing of the profession. Mr Casunga, 31, was employed at the time at the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. The NMC's code of professional conduct requires all nurses to be trustworthy and for these reasons the Panel decided that Mr Casunga is unsuitable to remain on the register and can no longer practice as a nurse in the UK. The Panel also found that on two occasions, Mr Brewer failed to disclose previous convictions on an application form and a declaration which is clearly misconduct and contravenes the section of the code requiring nurses to be trustworthy. Mr Casunga had been stealing the drugs over a two year period and was only discovered during an investigation of a fire incident at his flat. Commenting on the panel's decision, Craig Turton, spokesman for the NMC said: "It is important that the public trust in the nursing profession is maintained. Mr Casunga's actions are clearly a serious breach of the NMC's Code of Professional Conduct. It is essential that Mr Casunga is struck off so that the public can continue to have trust and confidence in the nursing profession."
