Orissa gears up to meet flood threats

By: Home and Family News

Amidst incessant rains triggered by a deep depression over the North-West Bay of Bengal, the Orissa government today geared up to meet flood threats as several major rivers showed rising trend.

Under the influence of the depression, heavy rains were experienced all over the state since yesterday.

The Baitarani and Vansadhara rivers were flowing above the danger level even as low-lying areas were inundated, Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal said.

The flood situation in Balasore district, however, showed improvement today with the Subarnarekha receding, he said.

However, heavy rains in its catchment areas under the influence of the deep depression could complicate matters, officials said.

Special Relief Commissioner Jagadananda Panda said the depression, formed over the North-West Bay, had intensified into a deep depression which was likely to cross the Orissa coast between Paradip and Balasore late tonight.

It could result in heavy rains all over the state.

The Baitarani was flowing at 18.16 mt at Akhuapada against the red mark of 17.83 mt and was rising. In south Orissa, the Vansadhara, in spate for the second time this monsoon, was flowing at 54.90 mt at Kashinagar against the danger level of 54.60 mt. The water level was measured at 83.45 mt at Gunupur against the red mark of 83 mt.
