Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has said Pakistan was in the eye of a storm during the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and sadly, was in the eye of that storm even now. He said there were many misgivings about Pakistan and not enough appreciation of what it had done and was still doing in the fight against terrorism. He said while Pakistan played an important role in defeating Communism in the region, it was left alone to deal with the consequences, after the Soviets vacated Afghanistan in 1989. “Pakistan was in the “eye of the storm” then and it remains in the eye of the storm today. Pakistan was a moderate, peaceful country once and that is what it wants to be,” the Daily Times quoted Musharraf as saying. Musharraf, who was addressing a gathering of world leaders and high-powered business figures, which also included Microsoft chief, Bill Gates, said the Pope had caused a lot of tension though his “most unwarranted remarks” on Islam and Prophet Mohammed. He said the time was for building bridges to foster close relations between different communities and religion. “It is time to build bridges, not burn them, close fronts not open them, and learn not to cause hurt to the Islamic world in the name of freedom of speech,” said Musharraf.
