Gift cards have become more and more popular over the past few years, but not all gift cards are created equal—some have hidden fees, strict usage rules, and expirations dates that come too soon. In order to help military families ask the right questions when buying a gift card, Pioneer Services has created a new article that lists some key considerations. The article, entitled Playing your cards right: A guide to gift cards, lists some of the common things to look for when purchasing a gift card. Using information from the National Retail Federation and other sources, it serves as a guide that can save both the buyer and the recipient both money and headaches. “Some people think that you just buy a gift card for a certain value and that’s the end of it,” said Karen Von Der Bruegge, chief marketing officer for Pioneer Services and author of the article. “But as research has shown, it depends on the type of card. Some cards may charge the purchaser a fee, others have a monthly service fee that takes away the card’s purchasing power, and still others may be bought from an online retailer that may not be around in a week. It’s not as easy as one may think. “It’s vital for customers—especially military families who enjoy the ease and convenience—to ask the right questions up front to avoid any problems later,” she added.
